Travel RBT Jobs: What to Check First

Travel work means a contract away from home, long drives or a move. Here is how pay and rules work, and how to widen your search.

ABAcases is a local case marketplace, not a travel staffing agency.

The short answer

  • Travel RBT work is a contract away from home, long drives between cases, or a move.
  • Pay is weekly on contracts and hourly on in-home cases.
  • Ask about drive time, mileage, guaranteed hours and cancellations.
  • Your RBT certification comes from the BACB. A few states add rules.
  • A wide drive radius on ABAcases covers cases in several cities.

Confirm current rules at bacb.com/rbt.

What travel RBT work looks like

Travel contracts
A staffing firm places you away from home for a set stretch, from weeks to months. Housing help or a stipend may apply if you qualify. One posting listed 18 weeks.
Long drives
In-home cases across a wide area. One posting says RBTs typically drive 30 to 60 miles a day.
Relocation roles
A job in another city, sometimes with relocation help. Some postings list relocation reimbursement when applicable.

Pay in real postings

Travel contracts quote weekly pay. In-home cases quote an hourly rate. They are not the same measure, so ask for hours and what is included.

Travel school contract
$1,326 to $1,510 a week
San Diego. Housing or a stipend if applicable. The posting says weekly pay includes taxable wages and tax-free reimbursements.
In-home cases
$23 to $28 an hour
Denver. Drive time and mileage are paid between client sessions.
Conditional travel pay
Paid travel and mileage
One posting adds "if applicable" and lists no wage. Ask what applies to you.

What to check in an offer

Drive time
Paid, and at what rate? Federal rules generally count travel between sites during the workday as work time. Your commute from home usually is not.
Mileage
The rate per mile, how often it is paid and where the count starts.
Guaranteed hours
A weekly minimum, in writing. Not every posting states one.
Cancellations
What you are paid when a client cancels, and how many hours that can cost you.
Housing or stipend
The amount, whether you qualify and what happens if the contract ends early.
Supervision
Who supervises you at the site where you work, and how often.

Rules that follow you

Certification is national
The RBT credential is issued by the BACB, not by a state. Renewal and requirements are in the RBT Handbook.
Supervision continues
The BACB requires supervision for at least 5% of your service hours each month, with at least two real-time contacts. You must meet it at each organization where you work.
A few states add rules
The BACB reports 3 states regulate behavior technicians and 2 more keep a registry. Nevada requires registration with its board. Louisiana registers line technicians under a licensed behavior analyst. Check the state board before you accept.

Requirements change. Confirm at bacb.com/rbt .

Cover a wider area on ABAcases

ABAcases lists local cases. We do not place you on travel contracts or provide housing. These steps help you reach more cases.

Set a wide drive radius
Raise your max travel distance in your profile. Cases across several cities show on your map.
Turn on alerts in every area you can reach
Cases open and fill fast. Alerts tell you when one fits.
Say you would relocate
Turn on "Open to relocating". Far cases stop counting as out of reach, and agencies see a tag on your application.
BCBAs: open to remote work
Mark yourself open to remote work and list your licensed states. Remote BCBA cases appear nationwide. Remote work generally requires licensure in the client's state.

Travel RBT questions

Is ABAcases a travel RBT agency?
No. ABAcases is a case marketplace for local ABA work. We do not offer travel contracts, housing or stipends. You can set a wide drive radius and turn on alerts in each area you can reach.
Do travel RBTs get housing?
Some travel contracts list housing or a stipend if you qualify. The local in-home roles we reviewed list drive time and mileage instead. Ask for the amount and the terms in writing.
Does my RBT certification work in other states?
The certification comes from the BACB, not a state. A few states add their own registration, so check the state board before you start. Supervision still applies at each organization where you work.
Is drive time paid?
It depends on the employer. Federal rules generally count travel between sites during the workday as work time, while the commute from home usually is not. Ask for the policy in writing.
Can BCBAs work across states?
BCBAs can mark themselves open to remote work and list their licensed states on ABAcases. Remote work generally requires licensure in the client's state, so confirm before you accept.
